Have you ever been infatuated with someone before? I'm sure most of us have. Some people might refer this as 'love at first sight'. Truth is, infatuation is not 'love' but it's more like a form of attraction. As soon as you meet, you feel this strong attraction to the other person. You get instantly attached and dependent on the person like you do on drugs.

Now, have you ever wonder what infatuation really is? According to wikipedia, "infatuation is the state of being completely carried away by unreasoned passion or love, addictive love".

Biologically, infatuation is caused by secretion of a certain brain neurochemical called phenethylamine. This chemical will cause our body to experience an exhilarating high very similar to that of ecstasy. Like how we will get addicted to drugs, believe it or not, we also will get addicted to our brain chemicals. Once these chemicals are cut off, we will experience withdrawal symptoms too. That is why you often hear people say things like "I can't live without her/him".

The reason behind the secretion of phenethylamine is quite obvious. We humans are biological machines created to survive and reproduce. In other words, it is needed to ensure the continuation of our species. Ever heard of someone say, "Oh, we had such a great chemistry together on our first date"? This is infatuation. It is just a kind of chemical high.

Love on the other hand is not a chemical high. True love goes beyond just sexual attraction. It entails a 'soul' connection where both are able to communicate in a deeper level and bond on the same energy level. More often than not when you are infatuated with someone, you will only see the good side of that person. You tend to idealize the person but the fact is, no one is perfect. If you get to really know the person and able to accept all his/her flaws and weaknesses, this is when the feelings of love will start to develop.
